Importance of Inland container depots  ( ICD)

As of March 2017, the total number of Inland deports in India is 129. However, data from a credible source indicated that only 80 ICDs were operational entirely.   These Inland  Container  Depots play a pivotal role in the seamless as well as safe movement of cargo between ports to the ultimate destination. Indeed,  ICDs form the pillar for effective international trade and logistics by being a hub for handling, storing, and clearing cargo far from sea or airports in the country itself. They act as a resting point between ports and inland destinations,  thereby,  simplifying the movement of goods, streamlining the process of customs and diminishing the traffic or the congestion at the port. Here’s a listing of the importance of ICDs in trade  in India-

Dropping Congestion at the Port and Improving Productivity: Imagine the direct movement of cargo to airports or seaports. The conditions of the ports would have been unmanageable, and as a result, productivity would have significantly diminished. This is where ICD has come to the rescue of traders as well as the administrating team of the port.  ICDs are like buffering agents that safeguard and handle cargo before it reaches the port, in addition to avoiding delays and congestion at the port.

Facilitating Documentation and customs: ICDs extend the amenities to equip the cargo with the necessary documentation and customs clearance with a specialised zone. This thereby fosters easy import and export. It also reduces cost and time linked with the movement of cargo between inland destinations and ports.

Storage and Handling Services: ICDs encompass the short-term storage of cargo containers, facilitating inventory handling and boosting the supply chain. The amenities of stuffing, unloading, servicing, and repairing containers improve efficiency and avoid delays.

Economic and Environmental Benefits: ICDs have been highly effective in safeguarding the environment from damage due to air, noise, and water pollution at the sea or airports. Also, ICDs create employment and business opportunities in the areas in their proximity.
