India’s Electronics Trade Growth: Exports Surge as Imports Rise

On October 7, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India issued a press release highlighting India’s Electronics Trade Growth: Exports Surge as Imports Rise. During July–August 2026, electronics exports reached USD 4.8 billion, while imports stood at USD 8.4 billion. Compared with the figures for 2025, this growth reflects rising activity in electronics trade, resulting in a trade gap of approximately USD 3.6 billion.

Thus, electronics account for a significant share of India’s trade deficit. Moreover, rising imports compared to exports further widen the gap, highlighting the need to boost domestic manufacturing and exports.

Smartphone Exports Rise in 2026

Smartphones have become one of the most important contributors to India’s electronics export growth. Smartphones are accounting for nearly 60% of electronics exported in the year 2026. It is the largest individual product export category, overtaking traditional leaders like petroleum products, precious stones, jewellery, and more.

Electronics and India’s Trade Deficit

However, this trend shows an interesting feature of India’s electronics industry: India exports more finished products while importing large quantities of inputs and components required for production. A major reason is India’s continued dependency on imported electronic components, semiconductors, chips, displays, and other intermediate goods. Many of these inputs are used in products manufactured and assembled in India for export. Moreover, recent reports highlight India’s dependence on imported electronics and key inputs, particularly from China. Consequently, strengthening domestic manufacturing and diversifying supply chains remain crucial.

Positive Side of India’s Electronics Trade Expansion

The growing deficit does not mean India’s electronics sector is performing poorly. In reality, the opposite is happening on the export side. Government data also show that electronics exports are increasing rapidly as compared to Indian imports. To conclude, India’s electronics industry is growing extremely quickly, but domestic component manufacturing has not yet expanded enough to eliminate dependence on imports.

Conclusion

Although India’s dependence on China and other countries for inputs and other electronics components is increasing, India’s exports of final products are also surging. The trade deficit is also increasing. However, exports are rising faster than electronics imports in the Indian market. This suggests that the trade gap in the electronics industry is just temporary. Once India strengthens the manufacturing base, its dependence on imported inputs and electronic components will reduce.
