Kenya relies on Indian rice imports to meet 80% of its rice needs. As a result, Kenya imports rice from India, and the most common type is Indian IR-64 parboiled rice. Overall, it takes 16 to 20 days to ship rice from the port of Kakinada in India to Mombasa, Kenya.

At customs, shipments must pass KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards) PVoC inspection before loading. Furthermore, they must undergo KNRA (Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority) radiation screening at the port of Mombasa.
