The deepwater facility in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is transitioning into a major international commercial gateway and linking the Vizhinjam export-import gateway with over 110 major ports across six continents.In addition, it is crucial in cutting down transit times and logistics costs for local trade.

DEEPWATER CONTAINER TERMINAL

Container Terminal Port, Vizhinjam:

Located just 10 nautical miles from major international shipping lanes, Container Terminal Port, Vizhinjam handles the world's largest container vessels. Above all, India's first mega deep-water container transhipment terminal has a natural depth of up to 24 meters.

Most importantly, it reduces the need for costly dredging. On top of this, it is South Asia's first fully automated container facility utilising indigenous tracking. Notably, the port is in an expansion stage with an annual capacity of 4 to 5 million TEUs by 2028.

Additionally, its full-scale export-import cargo operations will commence on August 18, 2026.

After this, it is a multi-purpose, all-weather, green port and is about 19 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. Overall, the port is 10 nautical miles from the heavily trafficked east–west shipping channel.

In other words, it connects Europe to the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, and the Far East (Suez–Far East route and Far East–Middle East route).

To sum it up, this port can host many of the world's massive cargo ships, including those exceeding 24,000 TEU, such as ULCS container ships.
