India To Dispatch Wheat To Afghanistan

The Hindu newspaper reported that the Indian government is set to dispatch 5,000 tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan through the Wagah Attari border crossing. The move is seen as a goodwill gesture towards the Afghan people, who are facing severe food shortages due to a prolonged drought. The wheat will be transported by road from the Indian city of Amritsar to the border crossing. From there, it will be taken by truck to Kabul, the Afghan capital.

This is not the first time that India has sent food assistance to Afghanistan. In 2016, India dispatched 5,000 tonnes of rice to help Afghans affected by another drought. The Afghan government has been appealing for international aid to help those affected by the current drought, which has left more than 3 million people in need of food assistance.

Import From Afghanistan To India Through The Wagah Border

Pakistan and India share a long border, which includes the historic Wagah crossing. Every day, hundreds of freight trucks cross the border between the two countries. For many years, this crossing was the only land route between Afghanistan and India.

The Wagah crossing is a major transit point for Afghan goods bound for India. In recent years, however, Pakistan has been increasingly reluctant to allow Afghan trucks to cross the border. This has created a bottleneck for Afghan exports and has led to higher prices for Afghan goods in the Indian market.

Pakistan’s decision to restrict Afghan truck traffic appears to be motivated by political considerations. Afghanistan is increasingly seen as an ally of Pakistan’s arch-rival, India. By restricting Afghan truck traffic, Pakistan can pressure Afghanistan to limit its economic ties with India.

The Afghan government has protested Pakistan’s decision to restrict truck traffic. However, so far Pakistan has not budged on the issue. This stand-off is likely to continue as long as relations between Pakistan and India remain tense.
