Mundra Strikes- September 2026
On September 1st, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) introduced a new system that requires all empty containers to be handled inside the Mundra SEZ. This decision triggered the biggest Mundra Strikes of September 2026.
This decision caused chaos at the port, as off-site empty-container depots, transporters, and shipping lines refused to comply. They want the flexibility and freedom to choose from all available off-site empty-container depots that have been providing them with services for decades.
The Mundra Strike began on August 28. It started before APSEZ introduced this system. Depot operators led the strike as they were losing most of their business. Later, truckers joined the strike. Now, shipping lines have also joined the depots. They are pressuring APSEZ to withdraw the changes and negotiate.
Why is Mundra Port Important?
Mundra Port connects North and North-Western India to various international shipping lines. It facilitates around 35% of the total container trade and 1.6 million TEUs of empty containers every year. In fiscal year 2024-2025, it became the first Indian port to safely handle
million tonnes of cargo in a single year. In simpler words, out of every 3 containers’ trade in India, Mundra handles one. Therefore, a strike at Mundra port isn’t just causing trouble for the crew; it is also disrupting overall Indian imports and exports. With most shipments delayed and shipping prices rising, producers and consumers are facing issues due to the ongoing crisis at Mundra port.
