Why Silver Imports are falling in India

When you wonder why silver imports are falling in India, it is due to strict government licensing rules. Apart from that, import duty hikes and efforts to protect foreign exchange reserves are the major reasons. Additionally, the government raised the import duty on gold and silver from 6% to 15%.
As part of the new licence rules, the government moved silver to the “restricted“ category.
In mid-May, its shipments required prior approval and certificates of origin, and the process slowed down.
Furthermore, the government aimed to lower the trade deficit.

In addition, this would support the Indian rupee amid high global energy costs.

Silver Imports Decline in India

Higher import duties and strict new licensing rules have led to a decline in silver imports in India.
On top of it, import duty hikes to 15%, licensing restrictions, and slumping shipment volumes have led to a decrease in imports.

Most importantly, the government raised import taxes on gold and silver from 6% to 15%.
Above all, protecting foreign exchange reserves was the main reason.
Additionally, the government shifted silver from the “free” to “restricted” category.
After this, legal shipments plunged from 747 tonnes to 29 tonnes.
In other words, local silver prices in India are trading at multi-month highs.

Conclusion

India’s silver import slump concludes that raising import duties from 6% to 15% and establishing strict licensing controls successfully protected foreign-exchange reserves. In other words, it has narrowed the trade deficit effectively.
However, it induced domestic supply crunches. Furthermore, the tariffs doubled to 15% and shipments shifted to “restricted” status. Moreover, the policy successfully curbed speculative investment inflows after record fiscal spending of $12 billion.
